Different classes of Refugees
There are two classes of refugees in Canada: Convention refugees and persons in need of protection.
Convention Refugees include individuals who are unable or unwilling to return to their home country due to a well-founded fear of persecution based on their
- race,
- religion,
- nationality,
- political opinion, or
- membership in a particular social group.
Convention refugees must meet specific criteria to be recognized as refugees by the Canadian government.
Persons in need of protection are individuals who do not meet the definition of a refugee, but they cannot return to there home country safely. This is because they have a genuine reason to believe if they return they will:
- face a risk of torture,
- death, or
- cruel and unusual treatment or punishment.
Once an individual has been recognized as a refugee in Canada, they are granted certain protections. These protections include the right to remain in Canada, the right to work and study in Canada, and the right to apply for permanent residency after a certain period of time. Refugees may also be eligible for various social benefits, including healthcare and financial assistance.
